Trapped and stranded, the soldiers waited to be rescued by an array of small ships and vessels. A small number of civilians were among the crew of these ships, known as the <u>Little Ships of Dunkirk</u>, which ferried the hundreds of soldiers. Nevertheless, most of these boats were piloted by experienced officials.
