New England Colonies

• Were settled by Puritans: most of the early settlers to the New England Colonies were English puritans who were seeking a new place where to practice their faith.
• Elected own governors: the New England colonies were essentially independent, and people who owned property elected the colonial governors.

Middle Colonies

• Became centers of trade: The Middle Colonies had the largest cities and ports at the time: Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, etc. These cities were centers of trade, and had a more cosmpolitan character than the rest of the territory.
• Had a House of Burgesses: The House of Burgesses were the legislative body of the colony of Virginia.

Southern Colonies

• Had plantation economies: the economy of the Southern Colonies was based on plantations of cash crops like tobacco and cotton, that were worked by slave labor.
