In the story "The Red Bow" by George Saunders, we learn of a town that gets together in order to kill a massive number of dogs due to the death of a girl who was bitten by a rabid dog.

The man who organizes such killing is Uncle Matt. Despite the fact that the measures he suggests are extreme, many of the people of the town support Uncle Matt's decision. One of the main reasons why this happens is because Uncle Matt is able to appeal to the people's emotions. He does this through the use of a red bow as a symbol for the life that was lost. He also achieves this by highlighting the importance of community and unity in the life of the town.

There are many examples of real-life situations in which grief or strong emotions cause people to take extreme measures. An example is the terrorist group IRA that developed in Ireland. This group took extreme measures in order to achieve their goals, including assassinations and bombs. Their actions were caused by the anger and grief they felt towards the English domination of Ireland.

What is the main idea portrayed by the editorial you have just read
vlabodo [156]

The editorial to which this question refers is "Yes, Virginia! There is a Santa Claus; timeless message"

Answer:

The central idea of the text is the ability to elaborate an answer to a child's question that is true, but does not compromise the child's innocence.

Explanation:

The editorial shows how a man was able to associate the existence of the Santa Claus, with the existence of feelings and inanimate things that exist in a subjective way in our life, but not in a concrete way. This answer was given to a child who wanted to know if Santa was real.

In this way they can confirm that the central idea of the text is the ability to answer children's questions in an appropriate way, without lies, but with delicacy.

People who like the idea of a plant that traps, kills, and eats meat love Venus Fly Traps. Despite that terrifying idea, the pla
timama [110]

Answer:

To show a contrast

Explanation:

If we look at the statement closely, we will observe that people's idea of the feeding mode of Venus Fly Trap is different from the way the plant actually feeds.

People have the idea that the Venus Fly Trap eats larger animals (meat) whereas it only eats tiny insects. The transition 'despite' as used in the sentence shows a contrast between people's idea of the Venus Fly Trap and its actual feeding mode.

Read the excerpt from The Ancient City.
dezoksy [38]

Answer:

The main idea of the paragraph is:

A. Many Greek towns held sporting events with similar games.

Explanation:

When writing a paragraph, we mention the main idea along the first lines and then develop and support that idea in the following lines. In the paragraph we are analyzing here, the author's main idea is expressed in the very first sentence, "The Panathenaic Games was only one of several great religious sporting events held in Greece." From that point on, the author mentions the other several games that were held in Greece. He/She does include minor facts such as the cities where they were held, who could participate, and what sort of differences there could be between them. But the main reason for mentioning all those games is to provide evidence and support to the main idea that the Panathenaic was only of several sporting events.
