nouvelles = feminine plural nouveau = masculine but has to be followed by a word beginning with a consonant (see the rule below) nouvelle = feminine singular
un ami is masculine. The rule with nouveau (or vieux) singular = you have to change it in "nouvel" (vieil) because a vowels is following. Same = un vieil homme (silent H) and not un vieux homme, but "un vieux tapis" (an old carpet). But in plural, you'd say = j'ai de nouveaux amis, ce sont de vieux hommes feminine would be "j'ai une nouvelle amie" feminine plural = j'ai de nouvelles amies.
