At that time there was the Harlem Renaissance.

Harlem's Renaissance was the African-American cultural movement of the late 1920s, early 1930s, and was born in the Harlem area of New York City. Known by different names - New Black Movement, New Black Renaissance and Black Renaissance - the movement emerged towards the end of the First World War, in 1918, flourished in the late half of the 1920s and lost strength in the first half of the 1930s.

The Harlem revival represented the first time that influential publishers and critics took African-American literature seriously and that African-American arts and literature attracted the nation's attention in a significant way. Although it was mainly a literary movement, there were also manifestations in music, theater, the arts in general and African-American politics.

The Harlem revival came amid the social and intellectual upheaval that exploded in the African-American community in the early 20th century. Several factors contributed to create the foundations of the movement. At the turn of the 19th century, after the North American Civil War, a black middle class developed, favored by increased opportunities for education and employment. During and after the First World War, a phenomenon known as the Great Migration occurred: hundreds of thousands of black Americans left the southern United States, rural and in economic depression, to seek, in the industrial cities of the North, better options for work.

Explanation:

Jack Riis is a American newspaper reporter, social reformer and photographer.

These tenements were for poor immigrants that just came to the United States to start a better life. These tenements were overcrowded, unsanitary, and unsafe housing. At least 18 people lived in one tenement apartment. There were only two toilets stalled on each floor and one bathtub in the kitchen of the apartment. Jacob Riis did a lot of research and reporting of the conditions that immigrants faced such as work issues and living conditions. He wanted to improve the living conditions that these individuals had and address working issues. He possessed great deals of energy which is why he was able to expose as much as he did about the slums. Jacob Riis crusaded for the establishment of settlement houses, public parks and playgrounds, and other reforms to improve the lives of those in New York City's slums.

A paragraph of equality
Anon25 [30]

Giving everyone the same opportunity to maximize their lives and talents is what equality entails.

While identifying various types of inequalities in society, various thinkers and ideologies have highlighted three main dimensions of equality: political, social, and economic. Giving everyone the same opportunity to maximize their lives and talents is what equality entails.

True equality has never existed, and will never exist. Good governments can give everyone an equal opportunity to succeed, but they can never raise those who fail in school or refuse to work; pure luck also plays a role. Bad governments take everything they can from the powerless and turn their leaders into new elites.
