Why was trade so important to the development of Ghana, Mali, & Songhai?

Due to the fact that these countries had many untapped resources and capabilities at hand, the emergence of trade routes and economic activities was crucial to the development of these countries. This is especially true when seeing the rural components within their community prior to the onset of trade.
