Mexico is divided into three major regions. These are the Central Plateau (Mesa Central), the Coast, and the North. This latter refers to the desert and Mediterranean climates that are found along much of the border with the United States. These areas are not heavily populated because of the dry and hot climate.

The coast is in generally much wetter, especially in the south, but temperatures are uncomfortably high most of the year. The Pacific coast also faces a tsunami and earthquake danger.

The Central Plateau has mild to cool temperatures and moderate precipitation. It is the most populated part of the country by far as large parts of it are also apt for agriculture.
