Many historians believe that one of the reasons of establishing Meroë as the new capital of Kush was the attraction of iron that drove the kingdom south: around Meroë, there were large forests that could fire the blast furnaces.
In approximately 300 BC the move to Meroë was finalised as the monarchs began to be buried there, instead of at Napata.
