My stomach feels like it’s tightening into a tiny little ball. I feel like throwing up. I keep thinking that I’ll get laughed at

the minute I step off the bus. Instead, I’m greeted by a couple of my friends who were in my English class last year. At that point, it hits me. Ms. Gruwell, my crazy English teacher from last year, is really the only person who made me think of hope for my future. Talking with my friends about our English class and the adventures we had the year before, I began to feel better . . . . I receive my class schedule and the first teacher on the list is Ms. Gruwell in Room 203. I walk in the room and I feel as though all the problems in my life are not important anymore. I am home. The author’s purpose for writing this excerpt is to heal.

Explanation: In order to determine an author's purpose of writing, you must think of the reason why the author decided to write about the topic, and what their attitude towards it is. In this excerpt, the author is addressing the anxiety of beginning a new school year, and how it worked out in the end.

Which sentence best describes the word pathos? A. It's a sound pattern. B. It's part of a narrative. C. It's a literary device.
Lady bird [3.3K]
I would say C. a literary device because pathos is like a quality that causes people to pity or show empathy towards you. You may use this as a tool as a writer to make the reader feel a certain way about your characters or victims of an event. It can be used to better understand and better convince readers of your opinion.

Select the two sentences in Passage 3 where the author appeals to the reader's emotions to support the
juin [17]

Answer:

"Isn't there something wrong when shipping jobs overseas has become so commonplace that we're able to write sitcoms about it..." (paragraph 17)

"Unless we take drastic steps to stop the job-killers, they may very well ship the rest of our jobs overseas..." (paragraph 20)

Explanation:

The author uses pathos (appeal to emotion) to support his arguments in Passage 3 by asking the engaging question of something going wrong with people being comfortable with talking about shipping jobs overseas on sitcoms and appealing to emotion by suggesting that unless drastic action is taken, more jobs will be shipped abroad.
