Inside the cortex lies a single layer of cells, the endoderm. Endodermis cells are critical in roots for one-way active transport and uptake of minerals from the soil. It separates the peripheral-outer and central-inner root pericycle tissues and regulates the direction nutrients move. The root dermal cells are made to absorb water following the transport of mineral ions from the soil. They have thin intervening membranes so water moves readily once inside the root.

The transmembrane carrier and transporter molecules move solutes inside the cells. This generates a low water potential drawing water into the cell. In most plant cells, the H+ ATPase is primary active transport.
