Egg tempera couldn’t be applied thickly to a painting because it dries very quickly and can crackle. It should be applied in thin layers and with small brushes, as opposed to oil painting that can be used in thick strokes.  Egg tempera can hold little pigment, and that’s why the colors are not as bright or intense as the oil painting which can hold much more pigment. However, egg tempera’s colors don’t change with time whereas oil painting colors do. They tend to become yellow and darken with the passing of the years.
