The Tuskegee syphilis experiment was infamous for the researchers not fully disclosing the reason for the study to subjects about their illnesses. Out of all 600 African American male subjects, 399 actually already had syphilis and the remaining 201 did not previously have the disease and were unknowingly infected with it. They were all told that they were being tested for "bad blood" under the guise of receiving free health care. After the experiment lost its funding, it continued testing the men but they never received free health care, they ever told of their disease, nor were they ever cured with Penicillin when it was discovered that the drug was a viable cure for syphilis. <span />
