Well both have to do with children who live a life of poverty and hardship. The differences of course is that in Hughes' story, the boy attempts to steal the woman's purse whereas Francisco (the protagonist Jimenez) is very proper and attempts to abide by the rules. Almost ironic that Francisco is the one who ends up being deported and the boy in "Thank you, M'am'' gets everything he wants from the woman.
