In 1861 Alexander II abolished Serfdom all throughout the Russian Empire. This was not enough to relieve the massive poverty and inequalities that struck Russian society. It as very hard for former serfs to purchase land and most noble people kept their land ownership and thus their hegemony over the peasant population.

This lack of social evolution was eventually one of the factor leading to the Revolution in 1917.
