American population grew in the 19th century to the 1920s as a result of heavy migration, and throughout that time the country was the world's largest recipient of migrants. In 1800 the population was only five million, but in 1920 it was already 106 million. Comers from the 1820s to the 1880s were mainly West Europeans such as English, Irish, German and Scandinavian. At the end of the century many Italian and Eastern European migrants, such as Jews, began to enter the country. Immigrants were attracted to the United States, in particular by good access to agricultural land, job opportunities and political and religious freedom. In addition to Southern Europe, the United States, particularly California, also received some migrants from Japan and China.
