Which of the following describes the threat President Harry Truman is warning against in the passage below? It would be an unspe

akable tragedy if these countries, which have struggled so long against overwhelming odds, should lose that victory for which they sacrificed so much. Collapse of free institutions and loss of independence would be disastrous not only for them but for the world. Discouragement and possibly failure would quickly be the lot of neighboring peoples striving to maintain their freedom and independence. Should we fail to aid Greece and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the West as well as to the East. We must take immediate and resolute action.2 — Harry S. Truman March 12, 1947

Make Inferences Why did the Aztecs demand tribute in goods rather than labor?
aleksandr82 [10.1K]

Answer:

Tribute was extremely important to the Aztecs for three reasons. First, it kept their capital and the people around alive. Because the population was so big and based upon the fact that the capital was on an island in the middle of a lake, the surrounding ground could not support the people. However, tribute could and did. Secondly, the Aztec empire extraction of tribute kept the conquered cities under control. In a way, it limited their economies and kept them lower than the capital and that was good. Finally, tribute and the threat of retalitation by the military was enough to keep the conquered under control but still allow them to keep their traditions and government mostly intact. This promoted peace and obedience to the Aztec empire.
