If the phrase <em>of the land </em>is underlined, then it would be an adjective phrase. This is because the whole place belongs to the noun <em>beasts - </em>what kind of beasts? (Those) of the land. 
You are describing what beasts are like, which means that you are using an adjective, not adverb.
