Because it is a "formal religion" symbol and if its used in normal building it will lose its "religous powers"

I believe that the best answer for this question is Antigone. She certainly meets a tragic end in the play, Antigone. Creon decrees that Antigone is to die in a tomb, after starving to death, instead of being stoned to death. However, Creon reconsiders, but before he can free Antigone, she dies after hanging herself. Hope this helps.
