The presidential system is characterized because the president of the government and the head of the state are the same institution, something that does not happen in parliamentary democracy, nor in liberal democracy.

In opposition to the presidential republic and the semi-presidential republic, in parliamentary democracy, the head of state does not normally have real executive powers as an executive president, since most of these powers have been granted to the head of government, usually called the first minister, and is elected by the will of parliament, not by direct vote of the electorate.
