The privateer, The White Lion, brought 20 African slaves into the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia. Their crew had captured the Africans from the Portugese slave ship Sao Jao Bautista. It may have started so early on as African slaves were a more cheaper and more plentiful source of labor in the 17th century to European settlers rather than indentured servants (who, for the majority, were poor Europeans.)
