Martin Luther King Jr. uses several metaphors in his letter to Birmingham jail. One in specific is "Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear drenched communities."  Here he is comparing racism to that off of storm clouds and the darkness that storms bring without the sunlight of day.
