A phrase is a related group of words. The words work together as a "unit," but they do not have a subject and a verb. A clause is a group of words that does have both a subject and a verb. Some clauses are dependent, meaning that they cannot stand on it’s own.

Relative Clause. There are three main types of dependent clauses: relative, noun, and adverbial. A relative clause is an adjective clause that describes the noun. It is important to remember that a relative clause is not a complete thought.  Another 4 are main [or independent], subordinate [or dependent], relative [or adjective], and noun.

There are five different kinds of phrases.

noun phrase.

verb phrase.

adjective phrase.

adverb phrase.

prepositional phrase.
