A reader can empathize that Sal's mother would not return because of depressed state. The reader can further predict the mother's plan through Sal's narration and the mother. 
Sal's determination to see her mother's dying place, tells readers the novel has a major mystery. Sal's mother starts showing her sad choices when she loses her child. She then feels jealous and gives a clue, she has given up on family.
