Where is the Panama hat from

To this day, in Yucatan State of Mexico, which has developed its own thriving Panama hat industry, hats woven of toquilla straw are more often called “jipijapas” than Panamas. No one I spoke with knew that the name had originated from the small town in Manabí Province, Ecuador.
