Which sentence contains parallel structure?
bearhunter [10]

Answer:

O Jonah has two ultimate goals: becoming a published columnist and writing a book.

Explanation:

Parallel structure in any given sentence is the use of the same grammatical structure or construction in the sentence. This repetition of the grammatical form in a single sentence allows for better readability and understanding, also making it easier to be framed.

In the given sentence, parallelism occurs in the use of the "<u>verb+ing</u>" in the words <em>"becoming"</em> and <em>"writing"</em>. It presents a smooth flow of words and the sentence construction makes for perfect rhythm. Thus, the correct answer is the first option.

Why does the Kalahari Dessert have seasons that are different from the Northern Hemisphere
Oxana [17]

Answer:

Odds are, human beings hit upon the lifestyle and innovations that enabled them to populate the planet in some place very like the Kalahari Desert, a small, surprisingly diverse, just-barely desert in southern Africa that still harbors what many geneticists consider the original human beings. The 100,000-square-mile (260,000 sq km) Kalahari is a faint echo of the vast Sahara Desert. The Kalahari is a desert for two reasons. First, it is just as far south of the equator as the Sahara is north, which means that it is a Southern Hemisphere desert for the same reason that the Sahara is a Northern Hemisphere desert and subject to the same drying, descending winds. Second, the Kalahari sits on a plateau about 3,000 feet above sea level and is bounded by mountains to the north and south, which cast a long rain shadow.

The Kalahari occupies central and southwestern Botswana, part of west central South Africa and part of eastern Namibia. It is part of a vast 360,000-square-mile (930,000 sq km) sand basin that stretches into Angola and Zambia in the north and takes in much of South Africa and Namibia. This larger region has great dune fields that have been frozen into place by a covering of plants, which indicates that it is part of a fossil desert. At some point it converted from true desert to arid grasslands as a result of climate shifts. A Southern Hemisphere desert with seasons reversed from the Northern Hemisphere, temperatures range from 95 to 113°F (35–45°C) in the hot months from October to March and often drop below freezing in the winter months of June to August.

timofeeve [1]

This question is missing the options. I've found the complete question online. I'll omit the passage, since it is the same:

What does the phrase "nor become popular enough with the English to hitch a ride" tell readers about the potato?

1. People in England preferred eating Indian turnips and groundnuts to eating potatoes.

2. People in England did not like the potato enough to bring it with them on the Mayflower.

3. People in England were planning to take the potato with them on the Mayflower but changed their minds.

4. People in England did not like eating potatoes because the potato had been introduced by the Spanish.

Answer:

The phrase tell readers:

2. People in England did not like the potato enough to bring it with them on the Mayflower.

Explanation:

According to the excerpt, the potato did not reach the popularity it has nowadays for quite some time. It was introduced to Europeans around 1570,<u> but it was not liked enough for the English to want to bring it with them on the Mayflower. That is what the phrase  "nor become popular enough with the English to hitch a ride" means. The potato did not "hitch a ride", meaning it was not taken back home with the English</u>. As a matter of fact, even in America - watch out because option 1 tries to make us confuse England and New England - the native inhabitants would eat other plant roots, but not the potato.
