Even though I haven't read the whole story, I think he is using the first person point of view in telling his story. This is because in using the first person point of view, readers will be able to put themselves in the narrator's shoes and experience what is happening in the story.
The team used in " a team of horses" means that there are different group of horses. Each group of horses comprises a whole team of horses. This is how the <span>word team is used in "the speaker's family a team of horses the speaker's football friends". A group or team is used interchangeably.</span>
