Protists are single-celled life forms and are eukaryotic organisms. Some of the protists like euglena shows both plant and animal characteristics. Protists are important in the following aspects -

  • These are a good source of food for many animals. For example phytoplankton is the major source of food for whales. Zooplanktons also serve a  good source of food for many aquatic organisms. These organisms often serve as the foundation of the food chain.
  • By doing photosynthesis they also used to be beneficial in the balance of ecosystem.

  • They often show symbiotic relations with other organisms.
