Firstly, the places in black represent cities within Germany, which makes sense since the printing press was invented in Germany. Then the blue covers cities that are close to Germany, making sense that they'd receive the printing press after some time first since they are neighboring countries, they'd exchange and trade inventions and ideas for money. The purple and pink show the further countries receiving the press because it took longer for trade to reach them. Finally, all the places that have them are cities since it'd make no sense to publish things such as newspapers and books in such large amount if you lived out in the country where barely anyone was.
