Answer:

D . $ 1.10

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the cost of each pen

    x-0.40 be the cost of each pencil

12x + 20(x-0.40)  = $16  is the equation

Solve the equation:

12x + 20x - 8 = 16

     32x = 24

         x =  0.75  is the cost of each pen

   x- 0.40 = 0.35 is the cost of each pencil
