In the folklore "People Could Fly", Virginia Hamilton tells the story of people who could fly away from their tragic lives in the plantations as slaves. She tells the story about a woman and her baby who flew away into the air after a man named Toby whispered some magical words into their ears. The woman and the baby who were being constantly beaten and lashed by the overseer were finally set free by the man who made them fly into the air. Similarly many other slaves were made to fly into the air by the same man when they were ill treated or beaten by the owners severely. The lesson that Virginia Hamilton shares through this story is that slaves were finally freed when they could fly into the air. Perhaps the word 'fly' has deeper meaning but on the surface, it essentially means freedom from misery and I'll treatment.
