The pronouns él, ella, ellos, and ellas are used with animals as well as with people. Spanish does not have the equivalent of an 'it' pronoun that in English is often used to express animals that are not pets. Do not be surprised then if a giraffe in Spanish is referred to as <em>el</em> which in English would mean <em>he. </em>
