The Muslim League was also known as the All India Muslim League.

When it was founded, the goals did not include establishing an independent Muslim state, it concentrated on protecting Muslim liberties and rights, promoting understanding between the Muslim community and other Indians, educating the Muslim and Indian community  on the actions of the government, and discouraging violence.

Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah (Aga Khan III) was elected as  first honorary president, he considered that Muslims should be a separate nation within India.

He resigned as president of the AIML in 1912.
