He also feels like he doesn't deserve anything good from the things he has done to people. To survive Arn must obey the Khmer Rouge, even when they tell him to bury people alive. Because of this he feels like he is a monster. There are also a lot of parts in the book that are about how Arn has this tiger in his heart that keeps coming out and makes him do all the things without any feeling like he has no soul.
