Very few Europeans towns and cities, of any size, had survived the entire war unscathed. The overall aftermath of the WWII to Europe, was a prospect of misery and desolation. Western Europe had most of its transportation and communication seriously disrupted, railway locomotives, roads, bridges had been blown up.
