The cost of putting down these rebellions further weakened the government. A weak government was unable to stop the influence of imperialist nations. Nations such as Japan, France, Great Britain, Germany and Russia wanted to expand their sphere of influence in China, and this influence encouraged westernization within the country. Westernization also developed due to trade, as China began to depend more on Western supplies to defend against its many internal conflicts.

I solely believe that the government does not represent the people that we were built to be. I feel that they only care for the money and power that they all have, and do not care for us. The government's job is to represent the people, and when we have government restrictions they are truly not representing the way we should be. We are a democracy, that was built on the people, and is represented by the people. <span />
