In this conversation we have to use the correct adjective to describe state. To talk about temporary situations such states and feelings we use the verb ESTAR conjugated according to each subject like this. Verb estar can be used in sentences that describe temporary situations such state, feeling, health condition or location.

Yo estoy (I am)

Tú estás (You are)

Usted/él/ella está (He/ she is)

Nosotros (as) estamos (We are)

Ustedes están (you are)

Ellos (as) están (They are)

Querida Marta: ¿Cómo estás? Yo (1) estoy feliz porque mañana vuelvo a Puerto Rico y te voy a ver. Sé (I know) que tú (2) estás triste porque tenemos que estar separados durante el semestre, pero (3) estoy seguro de que (that) te van a aceptar en la universidad y que vas a venir en septiembre. La habitación en la residencia estudiantil no es grande, pero mi compañero de cuarto y yo (4) estamos cómodos aquí. Las ventanas son grandes y (5) están abiertas porque el tiempo es muy bueno en California. El cuarto no (6) está desordenado porque mi compañero de cuarto es muy ordenado. En la semana mis amigos y yo (7) estamos ocupados porque trabajamos y estudiamos muchas horas al día.

Dear Marta: How are you? I am happy because tomorrow I return to Puerto Rico and I will see you. The room in the student residence is not large, but my roommate and I are comfortable here. The windows are large and are opened because the weather is very good in California. The room is not messy because my roommate is very tidy. In the week my friends and I are busy because we work and study many hours a day.
