Explanation:

Devils Island was described by even the worst criminals in all of France as a terrible place to be imprisoned. While the island was isolated and difficult to escape from, this was the least of the worries for the inmates.

Brutality and violence among prisoners was common, and treatment by the prison staff was not much better. Even worse, tropical diseases not to be found in France were common in French Guiana. The prisoners who came down with a tropical disease would succumb relatively easily due to the harsh living conditions and lack of immunity.

if it didn't exist we could launch more satellites or have larger space stations without the worry of perpetual radiation exposure as for earth there would be no negative consequences to the loss of the energy.
