The correct answer is C) They are greedy and selfish.

The author believed about factory owners were greedy and selfish.

In 1920, Samuel Gompers wrote a letter about the early trade union movement. In that letter, he considered the factory owners as greedy and selfish. It is clearly stated in some of the paragraphs of the text, such as this one: “…every step of the way iy was necessary to overcome the stubborn opposition of employers who were resolved not to recede and not to relinquish any of the powers and privileges which they possessed…” With those terms, Samuel Gompers refer to the factory owners as greedy and selfish.

Further Explanation

Samuel Gompers (born in London on January 27, 1850; died in San Antonio on December 13, 1924) was an American-born American cigar maker who later became a trade union leader and an important figure in American labor history.

In 1863, age 13, he migrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen there. After that he became chairman of ‘Cigarmaker’s Union. Gompers has served as president of the CMIU 144 since the federation was founded in November 1875 until June 1876.

The role of Gompers in the AFL he led was indeed very large, namely moving the workers with a principle of "volunteerism" (working comfortably). When the government often imposes wills on workers which results in oppression, this is not in accordance with the wishes of the workers they lead, so Gompers invites workers to boycott the government.

Gompers is the person who launched AFL politically neutral. But then Gompers supported the successful presidential nomination of William Jennings Bryan who caught the message of the labor movement launched by Gompers. Then, followed by Woodrow Wilson's victory in 1912 led to the creation of a US cabinet which sided with labor (1913), one of which was marked by the emergence of a Clayton Antitrust Act (Clayton Antitrust Act) in 1914, which was part of the Adamson Act (1916), which proposes working time eight hours a day, first applied to railroad workers between countries. Gompers is well known for the actions of changing the fate of workers in the United States.
