Answer and Explanation:

The<u> soil-plant-atmosphere continuum</u>, SPAC, describes the movement of water molecules from the soil, through the transportation system of a vascular plant, and then into the surrounding air in the plant's environment or atmosphere. Within plants, specialized tissue, called the xylem and phloem, form a plant-wide network of tubes to facilitate the movement of molecules to different tissues. Water molecules typically move through the plant in the order:

                         

                         soil→roots→stems→leaves

This occurs as follows:

  • As part of the vascular system, the xylem is responsible for the transportation of minerals and water firstly from the roots, where it enters from the surrounding soil into the root hairs.  
  • The water moves up the xylem vessel via<u> transpiration pull</u>. The dead cells in mature xylem vessels, are devoid of cytoplasms and arranged end-to-end, forming an empty tube within the plant's stem.
  • Transpiration pull, exerts tension on the xylem vessel, as water is lost continuously through evaporation from the surface of the leaves, through pores or stomata; this is called <u>transpiration</u>.

  • Guard cells control the transpiration rate by changing their shape to allow for more or less evaporation dependent upon the amount of water available in the surrounding tissue.
  1. open stomata= turgid guard cells= high water availability
  2. closed stomata= flaccid guard cells= low water availability

  • The <u>cohesion </u>of water molecules, where the molecules are thought to readily cling to each other, forms a continuous column. Along with osmosis, the movement of water molecules from regions of high concentration to regions of low concentration, cohesion is responsible for the movement of the water molecules into the atmosphere.

Calvin cycle is the second phase of photosynthesis, also called the light independent phase. This phase occurs in there major stages namely:

1). Carbon fixation: A molecule of carbon dioxide (CO2), which enters through the stomata of the leaves, is fixed in THREE TURNS i.e. 3CO2 by reacting with a CO2 acceptor called ribulosebiphosphate (RUBP) as catalyzed by RUBISCO. This reaction forms an unstable 6-carbon compound that breaks into 2 molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate (PGA).

2) Reduction: In this stage, the PGA is reduced and phosphorylated by NADPH and ATP respectively to form 6 Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) molecules. One of these G3P molecules leaves the cycle during its THREE TURNS to be used to produce a molecule of glucose. The remaining 5 G3P molecules is used for the third stage.

3). Regeneration: In this stage, the RUBP (CO2 acceptor) is regenerated in THREE TURNS by rearranging the 5 G3P molecules to form 3 RUBP molecules. That is, 3 RUBP to accept 3CO2.

Note: The emphasized THREE TURNS is what must occur in order for one G3P to leave the cycle.

DNA is a two-stranded helix. One strand is called a template strand, the other one is called a coding strand. The template strand is copied into mRNA, and the coding strand is complementary to the template strand. RNA polymerase, an enzyme responsible for transcription, has to recognize the right strand before transcription begins. So, it recognizes one or more short sequences on the coding strand. This is the base sequence of gene's promoter. Thus, the complementary strand is the template strand.
