How could he be both? Those two figures are very opposed to one another.

"And his soul will melt in prayer,

But word and wisdom is a snare; "

He was someone who pray a lot, but also someone who traps using words

"Corrupted by the present toy He follows joy, and only joy. "

The joy of the moment, with a toy, would be the one thing driving Cupid.

Cupid was not deeply religious, he was also an augur.
