<em>Hamlet</em> is a tragedy, which means that most of the main characters encounter death or a sad ending. This is the case in the play, and as the prince dies, the only person who can claim the throne of Denmark is Fortinbras. Fortinbras is Hamlet's foil in the story, and he has all the qualities that Hamlet lacks. Moreover, King Hamlet had taken land away from Fortinbras's father. Therefore, if he were to become king, every conflict in the story would be resolved and order would be restored.
