The United States supported South Korea while the China backed North Korea.  When the North invaded the South it started the Korean War.  With help from the Americans, they drove the North out of the South but when they did China entered the war.  They attacked the allies but later lost steam and in the end, it was a draw though some say the war never ended as each guards each other to this day.
