The system of checks and balances allows for each branch to check the powers of the other branches. This prevents one branch from becoming too powerful. For example, the president can veto legislative acts and the courts can declare presidential or legislative acts unconstitutional. By providing these checks and balances, the government is limited, allowing the will of the people to be more fairly represented.
