Anja responds to it by being sad and depressed due to neglect and lonely, saddled with the responsibility of taking care of their new baby in Vladek's absence.

Explanation:

Leaving loved ones or a community in search of better opportunities in new cities is the major cause of urban migration. Leaving the countryside with memories, family and friends to the city was not an easy venture, but my desire to have a better standard of living was stronger than the fear of missing out on the stability of my regular patterns, places and people.
