On page 10, Gwendolen meets Jack for the first time, who introduced himself as Ernest. Gwendolen says: "The moment Algernon first mentioned to me that he had a friend called Ernest, I knew I was destined to love you." This is an example of how Oscar Wilde makes women seem picky and naive.
On page 16, Algernon says that "The only way to behave to a woman is to make love to her, if she is pretty, and to someone else if she is plain." This is a perfect example of how Wilde makes men look like pigs.
The issue of marrying for love or marrying for status or wealth is still a prominent issue in todays society. Although more and more people now marry because of love, instead of something material the problem still occurs. This is due to an insatiable greed that will never cease to befall human nature it in fact is what makes us human.
P.S. E2020 wrote "In The Important of Being Earnest, Wilde makes fun of the many social rules that people are expected to follow. For example, Jack and Algernon create secret identities to help them avoid social obligations. Today, society still has a lot of rules for how people should behave. Sometimes, we can feel restricted or stifled by these rules, so we act out against them—like Jack and Algernon do—to express what we really want."
