Lagos was invaded by British forces in the year 1851 but Nigeria got independence from the Great Britain in the year 1960 after fighting for the independence.

Nigeria had to fight for the independence to get Independence and then finally it got political independence from the great Britain in the year 1960. After the constitution of the country was formed, it became a republic in the year 1979 which helped it to develop the economy.
