Why did earlier historians consider the Medieval Period the "Dark Ages"? The time had no electricity, and so it was an age that

was quite dark. A limited amount of written records survived to shine light on this time period. Castles were very dark and did not let in much light. The power of the Church stamped out the many bright pagan rituals.

Earlier historians consider the Medial Period the 'Dark Ages' due to the absence of written records which could have survived, which would have shone some light on this otherwise unknown period in time. The Dark Ages are often thought to be the years between 500 and 1500 CE, between the endings of the Roman Empire and the beginnings of the Italian Renaissance.

All of the following are examples of substitute goods EXCEPT:
Ainat [17]

The correct answer is D) toothpaste and toothbrush.

What is not an example of substitute goods are toothpaste and toothbrush.

In economics, when we are talking about substitute goods we are referring to two alternative goods that could be used for the same reason or purpose.

In the case of this question, you cannot substitute the toothbrush for the toothpaste. You need the two together to brush your teeth. You can do it with one or the other. In the other options, yes, you can substitute margarine for butter or a motorcycle for a car, both are means of transportation.

The map shows Germany at the height of the Cold War. Map of Germany at the height of the Cold War. West Germany is shaded orange
Juliette [100K]

Berlin was divided just as Germany was divided.

Explanation:

After the World War II ended, Germany was totally destroyed. The Allied forces didn't just left things like that, but instead they divided Germany into zones of influence. Germany was roughly divided into two parts, West Germany and East Germany. West Germany was further divided into zones of influence to the United States, United Kingdom, and France, while East Germany was under the control of the Soviet Union. The two parts of Germany had totally different developments throughout the Cold War period.

 • West Germany was helped to reestablish its industry and it rapidly developed.
 • West Germany became a democracy and it had a market economy.
 • East Germany was controlled by the communists, so its development was slow and there were lot of problems.
 • The economy was a command economy, which resulted in the people living in bad conditions and being very poor.
 • It was not just that the country was divided into two totally opposite parts, but also the capital, Berlin, had a wall built through it, and it was divided in the same manner as the rest of Germany, with the people not being allowed to move from one part to another.
