He was confused by a large amount of steam consumed by Newcomen's machine and found out that to improve this engine, he had to eliminate the constant cooling and reheating of the steam cylinder. This engine was the first that allowed the machine's operator to control the engine speed with a device called a centrifugal governor and used a new gear system.
