The right answer is NULLIFICATION CRISIS. During this political crisis, which took place between 1832 and 1833, native South Carolinian John C. Calhoun, who was the Vice President at that time, proposed the theory of state nullification, which would allow states (it would give them the right) to void or invalidate a federal law if this was deemed to be unconstitutional.
