Teddy Roosevelt developed the Roosevelt Corollorary as a precautionary attempt to stop European influence in Latin America. This was essentially an addition to the famous Monroe Doctrine, which essentially split the world into spheres of influence. The Europeans were able to influence countries in the Eastern Hemisphere while the United States would influence countries in the Western Hemisphere.

This attempt to stop European influence was caused by several different events, with one of the main ones being the crisis in Venuezla during the early 1900's.
